How to choose dog food without marketing hype
Searches like "best dog food" and "vet recommended dog food" flood Google — use criteria, not ads.

Educational information only — not veterinary medical advice. Always consult a licensed veterinarian for diagnosis and treatment.
The "best" food is the one that keeps your individual dog at healthy weight, with shiny coat, firm stool, and good bloodwork — on a budget you can sustain.
Label checklist
- AAFCO complete & balanced for life stage (puppy, adult, all life stages)
- Named animal protein first (chicken, beef, salmon — not only "meal" but meal is acceptable)
- Manufacturer with nutritionist on staff and quality control
- Appropriate for size (large-breed puppy formulas matter)
When to pick prescription diets
Kidney disease, urinary crystals, food trials, and some GI diseases need veterinary therapeutic diets — over-the-counter "sensitive" formulas may not be equivalent.
Common questions
- Are fresh subscription diets better?
- Some dogs thrive on them; verify they're complete and balanced for daily feeding, not just toppers.
