Educational information only — not veterinary medical advice. Always consult a licensed veterinarian for diagnosis and treatment.
The first year sets lifelong health habits: vaccines, parasite control, socialization, spay/neuter timing, and nutrition for growth.
Months 2–4
- Vaccine series + deworming per vet
- Begin positive potty and crate training
- Safe socialization (people, surfaces, sounds — not unvetted dog parks)
- Start nail handling and gentle mouth exams for future dental care
Months 4–12
- Complete vaccine boosters and rabies
- Discuss spay/neuter timing for breed/size
- Transition to large-breed puppy food if applicable
- Basic obedience: recall foundation, leash manners
- First professional dental assessment around 1 year for many breeds
Common questions
- When can puppies meet other dogs?
- After your vet clears it — often partial socialization via puppy classes with vaccine requirements.
